Dear Rev. AKMA

Dear Rev. AKMA,

(I am CCing Jeneane Sessum because she (I think) also admires your work, not to mention that she’s a fabulous writer, if much less reverent than you.)

I’ve been reading your blog for some time. I can’t decide why I can’t shake my habit, since I’m not involved with the rather obscure areas of theology you are expert in. Heck, I can’t even pronounce Hermeneutics, although I may have encountered Exegetical Fallacies, or maybe not.

I started reading AKMA because people I respect bantered with you on line, and you bantered back. I continue reading you for reasons I do not understand. Life is like that.

I may have I discovered an explanation for my AKMA ADDICTION: I use http://www.bloglines.com as as my RSS aggregator/newsreader.

My 563 RSS feeds–ouch! (and 372 have unread entries right now)–are displayed, you guessed it, ALPHABETICALLY.

That means AKMA floats close to the top of my Bloglines list, (currently position #23 of 563) with only a few numerically named blogs (or special characters) and other A-Players, including Ms. Sessum and Mr. Fred Wilsonabove you in my blog list.

Rev. AKMA, I’m writing simply to say “Thank you” in general (for a literate, often witty blog)
and “Thank you” specifically for your
mention of the passing of Paul Ricoeur.

When I was younger, I thought I understood a bit of phenomenology. But in the fullness of time, I know better. Rather, I know less.

I love Ricoer’s quote in the BBC article you pointed to. Although a bit long, it’s now my signature on my (much beloved!) Google “gmail” account.

Be well. And please keep up the good work.

“If I had to lay out my vision of the world …
I would say:
given the place where I was born,
the culture I received, what I read,
what I learned (and) what I thought about,
there exists for me a result that constitutes,
here and now, the best thing to do.

I call it the action that suits.
