Your Terabit Life

The BBC reports that Seagate has announced a 2.5-inch 160 Gigabyte hard drive, and 20GB and 40 GB “ruggedized” (-30C to 80C) hard drives for cars.

To my quirky taste, the 160GB TINY 2.5 inch drive is a yawner (“ONLY 160GB?), while the ruggedized hard drived aimed at the automotive industry are exciting. In my day job we build things that go inside telco “remote terminals” (metal cabinets with electronics and batteries for backup power where the temperature ranges from very cold to +65C at the high end, even in the middle ofa desert where ambient temperature is 125F). Until now, applications that deman mass storage were mutually exclusive with telco remote terminal equipment.

Before long, thanks to the auto industry, the barrier to reasonably priced temperature hardened mass storage located close to the access customer will melt away.

Think different.
