Adelphia; 16 Mbps Internet Downstream

The cable guys are upping the ante on “my broadband Internet access is faster than yours.” Adelphia has started offering 16 Mbps downstream 2 Mbps upstream..

Cox is offering 15 Mbps in some markets. Telcos with DSL offerings will soon be forced to either raise their Internet access speeds, lower prices, or both. The problem for telcos: they’ll be forced to significantly reduce the length of their copper access loops. Many of them have plant with 12 Kft loops, while newer builds are 8 Kft.

Can you spell (or smell?…) a move to 1 Kft cooper loops, with VDSL2? This “fiber to the node” can be significantly lower cost that “fiber to the home” for existing residential units. Fiber access is already reasonable in cost (althought higher than fiber to the node) for so-called greenfield deployments (brand new housing tracts).
