Extraction of Self
The New York Times, June 26, 2005 carried an interesting article by Henry Fountain, entitled: Worry. But Don’t Stress Out.
Staying (I hope…) within the bounds of fair use, here are two GREAT quotes:
“The problem of keeping data secure exists on lots and lots of levels,” said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington.
“The long-term danger is extraction of self,” Mr. Rotenberg said. “That others know more about you than you know about yourself.”
The term “extraction of self” is descriptive, and chilling.
We need to start rasing some serious hell about these widespread breaches of confidential data, by banks, cred card outfits, and credit reporting services. It’s outrageous.
