Bob Frankston re Samsung i730

Bob Frankston has, like you (and me!), been anticipating the Verizon Samsung i730 smart phone.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Bob is pissed that Verizon has crippled some useful features at least in this release.

I still have hopes for the i730, which is one Fine Machine. I’m investigating whether there’s some way to sync with Oracle Calendar (nee Corporate Time). Am I man enough to hold my nose and use Pocket outlook as my mobile email client? Snapper Mail, only available on Palm OS, is a SWEET email client for my corporate IMAP environment. And my IT department supports it…

Rather than toughing it out with a Samsung i730, should I accept the Treo 650?

  • Treo: No EV-DO
  • Treo: Keyboard I do NOT like
  • Slower CPU
  • Weak(er) Word and Excel display/editing
  • WiFi NOT included
  • In FAVOR of the Treo 650:

  • My AWESOME, wonderful, “sweetest people on earth” IT Department supports the Treo 650
  • i730 foces me to use Pocket Outlook rather than Snapper Mail)
  • Treo 650 uses Palm OS, leveraging mu six year investment in the Palm way of life.
  • Against i730: If I “go to the dark side” and adopt Microsoft Pocket PC. I’ll become a social outcast among my geeky friends Life is short. Why risk being shunned, when you have so few friends to begin with?
  • Or maybe I’ll just wait? Or accept a Blackberry?

The Samsung i730 has great form factor. The keyboard is much easier to type on, compared to the membrane keyboard of the Audiovox XV6600. Biggest complaint to date is that you cannot make or receive phone calls while using WIFI.

[...] It has been a while since we talked (here, here 2, here 3, here 4, here 5 and.. here 6) about my dreams for a useable mobile phone and PDA combo. When last we spoke, I expressed my love (lust?) for the Motorola Q, coming to a store near you in early 2006. That is a long time for any of us to wait, but I’m trying to restrain my impulses, yet I really want to Live a Better life Now. [...]
