“Only” 227 Cars Burn

The French riot situation may have peaked. Last night there were “only” 227 cars burned. Whew! According to an article by John Lichfield in The Independent, the reduction in riot activity could be misleading.

Some police intelligence sources and social workers warned that last night’s relative calm — “only” 617 cars burned throughout France, compared to 933 the night before — might yet prove to be just a lull.

Interior ministry officials attributed the relative calm to the large number of arrests — over 1,100 since the riots began – and the exhaustion of the rioters. French media also agreed several days ago to concentrate their coverage on the consequences of the violence, rather than showing endless footage of violence.

[correction: I earlier mis-reported that 617 cars burned.]
[or maybe not? Scotsman.com says the number is 617.]
