VMWare Experiment

You’ve listened to me mumble about virtualization long enough. It’s time to translate my words into action. So I’ve downloaded the (free) VMWare Player, and their new Browser Appliance.

For a good overview (it, motivated me to get off my behind and try this technology), read this note by Steve Hamm of Business Week Online.

VMware is a true tech-industry phenomenon. With revenues doubling each quarter, it’s on the same growth trajectory as Oracle was in its salad days–and Oracle was the fastest-growing software startup ever.

Now VMware is making virtual machines for the rest of us. The company, an independent subsidiary of EMC, just released two pieces of software that could make virtualization a household word. (Well, in very nerdy households, at least) The first is its VMware Player. This software allows you to download virtual machines onto your PC (running Windows or Linux) with applications inside them. To show people how useful the VMware Player can be, the company has also made available for download a virtual machine, which it calls the Browser Appliance.

As we speak, I have completed downloading the player and the Browser Appliance. I’ll let you know how it goes. I am trying these VMWare goodies on a ThinkPad T42. I do have 1 GB of RAM, so thiis fancy dancy virtaulization layer so I can enjoy a totally safe Internet sandbbox just may work.
