IBM T42 Glitch

An acquaintance tells me he personally knows of three IBM T42 users who have reported CPU fires. In each case, they were doing a build (compiling) on Linux.

I have not confirmed this rumor directly with the individuals who experienced this issue. The speculation is that a long running CPU-intensive task overwhelmed the cooling ability of the CPU fan.

I am a happy T42 user. I can report the CPU does not run hot while reading or writing blogs.

Maybe the Linux source code should carry a warning label:

“CAUTION: Compiling this code may make your laptop catch fire.”
