Gmail Delete Button

A tiny, rather obvious and almost inconsequential feature the Google email client has my heart pumping. This user interface breakthrough is a dedicated DELETE button on the main screen.

From the beginning, Gmail refused to expose the Delete function at the top level. The rationale was that since they provide (FREE) essentially unlimited email storage, why waste time deleting messages?

Google has absolutely first-rate SPAM detection and handling. They have a great algorithm that in my experience never allows junk to slip through, and very seldom makes a mistake and classifies something I consider to be OK as SPAM. It’s awesome. I just wish our enterprise email system were even close matching Google on this SPAM-killing dimension.

Anyway, Google, here’s a big wet kiss for your Gmail user interface improvements. You are still the best, but I will try out the new Microsoft and Yahoo email clients when they let me.

In the meantime, Laszlo Mail is rather cool, and is getting better every few days. They are going to adopt an easier to remember and type name, which is a A Good Thing. Laszlo now provides 250M of free storage, and a little birdie whispers that LasloMail may soon adopt a Google-like system of randomly upping the storage ante.

If you want a rich, desktop style email system that happens to be web based, LasloMail is a good choice. I look forward to comparing it with the Yahoo (nee Oddpost) offering now in beta) as well as the supposedly cool Hotmail replacement Microsoft is cooking up.

Dang Ron, I was bitching and griping today about the “Trash” option being gone and didn’t even notice the “Delete” button. Thanks!

    Finally!

This may be the thing that makes me switch to GMail. Maybe…

The trouble is, I’m so used to opening the drop-down menu to delete a message… it’s going to take me a long time to get used to clicking the dedicated button.

I never thought a Delete button would bring such joy, but I’m almost giddy with excitement.

I’m not sure I find GMail’s spam detection to be so remarkable, though. It’s pretty good, but I get plenty of false positives and false negatives. My favorite was when GMail thought a registration confirmation from Picasa was spam. (Both are Google products.)
