Asterisk At Home

I’ve been watching the Asterisk open-source (and free!) PBX grow into adolescence. This latest Asterisk@Home news sounds promising. I plan to resurrect a machine from my (growing) PC Graveyard at home and give this a shot. I can do this.

Through friends, I’ve heard glowing Asterisk reports (but he is ultra technical). However, I also know of someone who bailed out of Asterisk for a couple of reasons. Reason one was he could not get it to behave the way he wanted it to using Vonage.

But in my opinion, he real reason he bailed out o Asterisk (beside frustration…) was that Skype happened. In his small start-up, he routinely uses Skype for long calls to partners internationally. The quality is good, and the price — FREE — is perfect. Even when he uses SkypeOut at a very low per-minute rate he’s a happy camper.

Now Skype is NOT a PBX, so in a dream world, there would be a way for Asterisk to interface with Skype. I have not researched that specific issue. If you have info on it, please comment here or email me. Use [at]gmail [dot] com and prefix it with rjeffries.
