OpenLaslo Gets AJAX-y

Andrew Woolridge, writing about the recent IBM and friends Open AJAX announcing says: “I’d give my Eye Teeth for a DHTML (canvas?) version of Laszlo.”

Andrew, I have good news for you. If you check the OpenLaszlo Wiki, they pare already on the case. And also check DHTML development tools on their Wiki.

If OpenLaszlo completes the project, (and it is completely open!) the same LZW compiler will generate Flash (smf) or AJAX-Y target code. Not too shabby.

One expert told me (lightly edited):

“I think Flash will be faster for most complex applications especially over low bandwidth/high latency connections, but it will be interesting to see whether that is true. You can also do embedded media in Flash and, the rendering is more consistent across platforms and browsers.

We’ll see that some apps will make sense in DHTML and some in Flash. With a common application description language, developers could potentially defer the decision about the runtime until later in development.”
