Moto Q — Not Bad, Not Perfect
Aaron R. Deutsch writes about the Motorola Q QWERTY phone from a skeptical point of view. Worth your time to read if — like me — you’re in the market for a new killer phone.
The lack of a touch screen is something I’ll consider carefully. I expected a touch screen, but Motorola followed the Blackberry in NOT providing a touch screen. It’s a tough call.
No touch pad means not having a stylus to lose. More importantly, this missing “feature” forces software to NOT assume pointing at the screen, so that a stylus is never required. That’s not a bad thing.
The Q’s lack of WiFi is a yawn to me. EV-DO is so fast (and comes as an all you can drink package) that I’ll seldom care. I’ll gladly carry a little WiFi Mini-SD card thingie when and if one is offered.
My concern about the Q is whether I can learn to love (well, tolerate) the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 system. Yeah, WM5 is imperfect, but if the voice recognition for dialing works well, I may get over it.
I’m not quite ready to buy (a Q or other high-end phone). But by Independence Day (July Fourth, for my non-American readers) I could Set Myself Free (of a two year old ho-hum candy bar phone that’s about worn out).
Then Cloudy Thinking can return to exciting topics such as the coming bird flu pandemic.
I’ll bet you can hardly wait!
