Divinski: Joy of Software
Joy of Software is a new blog by Jane Divinski. She’s a friend from farther back than I care to admit.
I helped Jane get her first job at SysteMetrics, a Santa Barbara, CA USA consulting outfit. Yes, we did have telephones, a fax and flush toilets, but this was BEFORE the IBM PC. We are talking CP/M on early “microcomputers” using 8 inch floppy disks.
I am making myself sound older than I feel, if you know what I mean.
For the past 15 years or so, Jane has made her living consulting. She is a “rented” S/W Engineering Vice President, typically.
This model makes sense for early start-ups while they do a search. She also has gigs where executive management or the VCs boot out the old s/w boss but need to keep the wheels on while they search for new blood.
She explicitly goes in under ground rules that she will NOT accept the permanent position.
Jane’s job isn’t my cup of tea, but she makes a great living filling this role.
Me? I’d rather pick up dog poop.
