Iraq War News Coverage, Lack Of

Editor and Publisher summarizes Frank Rich’s Sunday op-ed column for The New York TimesThe Peculiar Disappearance of the War in Iraq.

I’ve noticed this phenomena. Almost all news coverage is currently focused on the fighting in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel. There’s barely a mention of the continuing Iraq quagmire.

About 100 people a day are killed in Baghdad due to the sectarian violence, (otherwise known as a full blown civil war).

Young (and not so young) American soldiers and Marines are getting killed every week. But the news industry seems to not be interested.

The new “Lebanon war” dominates the headlines and the cable news cycle. After all, Anderson Cooper can’t be in two places at one time.

The madness in Iraq seems to now be treated as background noise.

When will American citizens finally realize that — no matter how lofty our initial aspirations were — Iraq War II is at an impasse, with no honorable conclusion in sight?

The political and military leadership of the USA already knows our adventure in Iraq is an expensive failure. It’s time to say “enough is enough,” and plan an orderly extraction of US forces.

Iraq will likely devolve from one (artificial) country into three, along sectarian and ethnc boundaries. So be it.

The average American has reached the point where people say “If Iraqis want to kill each other, why is that my problem?”

Yes, it will be VERY difficult (and dangerous) to manage the withdrawal from Iraq. But it’s time to face the music.

Yes, it is time to leave now, and put Saddam back in power so that he can bring order to the region. Israel probably gave those gullable believers information that Saddam would harm the US interests in order to not have to fight him when Israel decided to invade Lebanon. Most importantly, Israel would not have attacked Lebanon if Saddam was not in jail.
The most important thing in life is LIFE itself. After 9/11, a rational thinking person would have asked the attackers, “What’s your beef, Pal?

Decisions made today by the warring faction are examples of individuals who have not evolved intellectually. Although the Sun will become a Red Giant in maybe 3,000,000 years, it will not take much of an expansion to wipe out all of humanity. So, why not put an end to all religions and go for mental health examinations for all nationalities all over the world - that is if a lasting peace is to be achieved. Otherwise it is STUPIDY AS USUAL looking for a sustained peace in the world.
