Help Our Troops Save on Long Distance

AT&T should be ashamed of itself. It has a contract with military PBXs in Iraq for long distance service. Simply put, AT&T is ripping off our GIs. But there’s a workaround.

Tom Evslin writes at Fractals of Change about how (some…) troops can save money by (wisely) using the Defense Switch Network.

Some but certainly not all of our troops in Iraq are able to bypass the outrageous rates which AT&T (which has a payphone monopoly in PXes) charges for calling home. These soldiers are at bases which have morale centers equipped with DSN (Defense Switch Network) phones. These phones can be used to make free calls to bases in the US which will often complete instate calls free or allow the use of cheap domestic calling cards for out-of-state bases.

I have an even better idea: what if the AT&T management team decided they should extend their BEST long distance rates to these kids who are serving our country? Setting high long distance rates for our servicemen is outrageous behavior by a major US corporation.

Do the right thing, AT&T.
