The company [AT&T] will introduce a new service in the Bay Area today that will allow customers to watch movies downloaded from the Internet on their TV, play music stored on their PCs with their home audio systems, and program their digital video recorder from their office PC.
AT&T will offer the service, dubbed Homezone, as a $9.99-per-month add-on for customers who already receive DSL and satellite television from the company.

AT&T is offering Homezone in conjunction with EchoStar’s Dish Network. Subscribers to the service will get a new DVR box, developed by San Jose-based 2Wire, that will be able to connect with their home computer network via WiFi. Digital content has exploded in recent years, but customers have faced a challenge getting it into their living rooms. Homezone hopes to solve that problem.

One potential shortcoming of the service is that it won’t be able to access files downloaded from Apple’s iTunes service, the most popular digital music service online. Additionally, to get movies from the Internet, customers will have to download them using their PCs, not from the comfort of their couch.
