CALEA
Brad Templeton of the Electronic Freedom Foundation spoke about Why You Should Love CALEA at the O’Reilly Emerging Telephony Conference.
CALEA is the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, a law passed in 1994 that requires telephone carriers to put hooks in heir system to allow wiretaps.
The large telcos ILECs (incumbeent telephone companies) love CALEA. This complex law makes it much more dificult for small companies to provide innovative new phone services.
Brad’s talk starts about 15 minutes into the recording provided by Phil Windley of IT Conversations.
