Where’s MY $3 Microsoft XP + Office Bundle?

Don Dodge writes about Microsoft’s announcement that they’ll supply Windows XP and several applications for $3 per person in developing countries.

Microsoft today announced the Microsoft Unlimited Potential program to bring computers to the next 5 billion people. Microsoft will work with the governments of countries to supply low cost PCs to students. Microsoft will provide Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Math, Learning Essentials, and Windows Live Mail, all for $3, to governments that purchase and supply PCs directly to students.

Bill Gates, you know — the billionaire guy with a garage that parks 65 automobiles — is quoted thusly:

“All human beings deserve a chance to achieve their full potential,” said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft.

“Bringing the benefits of technology to the next 5 billion people will require new products that meet the needs of underserved communities; creative, new business approaches that make technology more relevant, accessible and affordable; and close collaboration between local governments, educational institutions and community organizations.”

That’s fine Bill. But help me “achieve my potential.”

Why do you charge me about $1,000 for what you sell for $3 to others?

What makes Bill Gates blood run cold is the thought that 5 billion folks may adopt completely free and open source software such as Linux and Open Office. Oops! No future upgrade fees to Microsoft.

Although I’m being snarky, I do greatly admire what Bill and Melinda Gates are doing globally to help chidren, and those with HIV/AIDS. That’s great stuff. Kudos.
