Craigslist Used to Hire Waitresses (but not cooks…)

I purchased a small utility trailer yesterday via Craigslist. It was an easy, efficient transaction, an example of how effective Craigslist can be.

The trailer owner runs a local restaurant. When we discussed how cool Craigslist is, he mentioned he now hires waitresses via Craigslist, generally college students. In the past, each such hiring event would have cost him about $50 for an advertisement in the local paper.

Here’s a conundrum: when hiring cooks, he still runs an ad in the newspaper. Why?

Demographics and job responsibilities. Without explicitly stating so, the hiring manager sets a requirement that the waitress (waitperson?) candidate has enough sophistication and education to use the Internet and Craigslist. He apparently wants a waitperson that is educated and able to converse with Internet-savvy customers. He apparently believes that a cook doesn’t require that type of knowledge — probably just good cooking skills and the ability to run a restaurant backend.
