We Need Instant-On Computers
My otherwise delightful IBM T-42 laptop takes a long time to boot up with Windows-XP. It also shuts down slowly.
I tote my laptop to the restaurant, coffee house and bookstore. I want to simply turn on my laptop and start using it, rather than wait a few minutes.
Last week a friend showed me his Nokia 800 internet tablet which is flash memory based. It’s sweet. You turn it on and start using it, no dorking around.
My Palm Treo 700p like all other smart phones, turns on and is ready to rock ‘n roll. Instantly.
If you are one of those who are skeptical about Microsoft Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) or the similar Intel Mobile Internet Device (MID), here’s a news flash: you are dead wrong.
There will be a huge market for these small internet devices. People like me will carry them around, to the restaurant, coffee house and bookstore.
For now, the Nokia 800 and similar devices are pricey. But when the price hits $300 they’ll fly off the shelves.
I can’t wait.
