British Telecom Plans to Deploy Fiber to the Curb
Andrew Parker writes that British Telecom plans to deploy fiber to the curb. They’ll offer 40 to 50 Megabits per second of bandwidth to the residence or office.
That means their “curb-side” cabinets where fiber feeds a broadband loop carrier that then connects to copper telephone loops must be located VERY close to the end user, probably not over 3,000 ft.
This is similar to the model AT&T is planning to use in the USA. Verizon’s FiOS project extends fiber all the way to each user. That’s a lot more expensive, but also allows Verizon to offer much higher bandwidth connections.
