Richard Stallman is now using XO computer from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)
Richard Stallman is concerned about the proposal that One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) switch to using Microsoft XP rather than Linux as its operating system. Stallman recently switched to using the XO laptop from One Laptop Per Child, replacing his IBM T23, which used a non-open BIOS.
The OLPC machine uses completelyl free and open software — even the BIOS. (The one exception is the wireless driver, which Stallman has disabled.)
I share this concern about a possible rdical chnage in direction by OLPC. One would assume that Microsoft of possible the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has promised a massive assist if OLPC changes to Windows XP rather than Linux.
Let’s hope the One Laptop Per Child people “see the light” and pres forward with free and open software.
