Ron K. Jeffries: We need a netbook done right
This Investor Busines Daily interview with Jeff Hawkins motivated me to capture my thoughts on the netbook I want to buy. If you have comments, email rjeffries [aht] gmail [daht] com with subject line starting with [NETBOOK]. I’ll blend those into a future post. If you prefer blog comments that’s OK also.
We need a netbook done right.
Use cases:
– coffee shop computer
– travel companion
– second (independent) screen in office
for IM, social apps such as multicast chat (identi.ca, twitter)
Primary function:
Great web browsing including streaming video
Netbook design goals:
– instant on (flip open, browser usable within 30 seconds)
– comfortable touch typing
(close to standard size keyboard with great feel)
– screen size and resolution do not require horizontal scrolling
– minimum 4 hr battery life
– low weight
– not fragile
– Wireless support WiFi/WiMax
– internal 3G option
– support for leeching 3G from mobile phone
(advantage: only buy one monthly service plan)
–encrypted mass storage for portable security
Although I’m not an Apple fanboy, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to envision a future killer Mac netbook. I want one, no matter who builds it.
