Recession Indicator: Santa Barbara Writers Confererence on hiatus

After a run of 35 years, the famous Santa Barbara Writers Conference is taking a one-year hiatus. The reason: Not enough writers signed up for the event, even though 450 people attended last year. Registration for the conference was $675 this year, or $875 after March. In Santa Barbara, Lodging and food for six days would more than double that amount.

Said conference executive director Marcia Meier: “If people have the discretionary income, they are being cautious with it. Most of us don’t know what’s going to happen. There’s just a lot of concern out there.”
