Learning Videography
Last week I bought a JVC GR-DVM90 video camera. When it was introduced in 2001, the list price was $1,600. Thanks to the passing of time and the abundance of new and oh so shiny objects, I paid $75 for the complete kit. Thank you, Craigslist.
This is a digital video camera which records on standard DVC tapes. It has a Firewire (1394) port to pump the digital stream into a computer. My otherwise great HP DV4 laptop does not have 1394 port, but my wife’s older HP 9000 17-inch laptop does. As you might guess, I’ve started treating my wife even better than normal, as I’ll need to borrow her machine to import my raw video for editing.
Although I spent eight years of my life as a professional still photographer, there’s a lot to learn about videography and video editing. But won’t let those details stand in my way. YouTube, here I come.
